Things you need to know about advertising and purchasing Animals and Plant species in Australia:

The Commonwealth Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts (DEWHA) regulates the import and export of plants and animals under Part 13A of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (the EPBC Act).

This legislation also reflects Australia’s obligations under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).

CITES is an international agreement involving over 170 countries. It aims to ensure that international trade in specimens of wild animals and plants does not threaten their survival. Documentation will need to be obtained from the department before CITES listed specimens (or products derived from them) can be imported, or exported from Australia.

The EPBC Act’s ‘Live Import List’ indicates whether or not a permit is required to be obtained from DEWHA before a specimen can be legally imported to Australia.

Part 1 of the Live Import List identifies those species which may be imported into Australia without a permit being issued by this Department.

Part 2 of the Live Import List identifies those species which may be imported into Australia, but must be accompanied by a valid import permit issued by this department.

If a plant or animal is not listed on the Live Import List, it cannot be imported into Australia.

Species that are currently listed can be found here
